Is it harder to find a job with a criminal record?

On Behalf of | Jun 4, 2026 | Criminal Defense

It can be harder to find a job if you have a criminal record. Businesses are not prohibited from hiring people with records, and many business owners will do so. But they can also consider a person’s record, which is why they may run a background check during the hiring process, making it harder to land a job.

In some cases, it depends on the type of record you have and the industry in which you work. If the two are unrelated, it may have a far smaller impact.

For example, if you have an impaired driving charge on your record, getting a job as a commercial driver can become very difficult, but you may not have any problem landing an office job. If you have an embezzlement charge on your record, conversely, it may be harder to work in an office setting, especially if you will be dealing with financial assets. But you may be able to get a job driving a tractor-trailer or a delivery vehicle.

What legal options do you have?

If you have been applying for jobs and being passed over because of your criminal record, one thing to consider is that you may be able to have that record sealed or expunged.

Generally, this means that your record still exists. It is not as if the event did not happen, and the authorities can still see a record of your conviction.

But if you have the record sealed, it is then blocked from a background check, so employers will not see it. This may make it easier for you to get a job and find financial security after you have served your sentence.

As you can imagine, sealing records can have a major impact on your future, which is why it is so important for you to understand all of your legal options when looking into post-conviction relief.
